New York City recently passed three bicycle-friendly regulations, affecting building and parking garage owners, architects, and developers.
Bicycle Parking in Garage and Parking Lots (Intro 780)
EFFECTIVE AS OF NOVEMBER 13th, 2009
Bicycle parking spaces are now required in all garages with more than 50 vehicle parking spaces. Operators must provide 1 bicycle parking space for every 10 vehicle spaces up to 200 spaces.
BICI provides innovative parking solutions that can meet this new requirement without removing automobile parking spaces, increasing garage revenue through bike parking fees. BICI surveys spaces, determines underutilized areas, and makes specific infrastructure recommendations. BICI also provides infrastructure procurement and installation services.
This law is intended to provide secure parking to New Yorkers who commute by bicycle but are ineligible for bicycle access through Intro 871.
Bicycle Access Bill (Intro 871)
EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 11th, 2009
With City Council’s passage of the Bicycle Access Bill, commercial building owners will be required to allow tenants to store their bicycles inside. Under the new law, landlords and building managers will need to provide a comprehensive bicycle access plan or face DOB inspections and fines. Building owners are required to file the plan, designating passage routes and storage areas, within 30 days of a tenant request, and post that information in a highly visible area.
With proper planning and policies, these new regulations can be easily instituted by both landlords and building managers. BICI has developed a specific set of services to help large and small buildings accommodate cyclists and comply with Intro 871. These services include:
EFFECTIVE AS OF APRIL 22nd, 2009
Expanding bicycle infrastructure not only demonstrates your company or building's commitment to sustainable forms of urban transportation, it is required by new zoning laws. We can help to intelligently increase your infrastructure to meet the needs of employees and tenants. Our design process is site-specific: no two companies and buildings are alike--why should bicycle infrastructure solutions be?
Regulations mandate each bicycle be allotted 15 sq/ft of parking space, however approved designs can bring this requirement down to 6 sq/ft per bike. BICI has worked with the Department of City Planning and has a thorough knowledge of these new requirements. Not only can we ensure compliance with the zoning requirements, we offer design solutions that are functional and minimize the necessary square-footage to comply with regulations. BICI can work hand-in-hand with any architect or developer to ensure excellent designs, minimal costs and full code compliance.
